So, What's Up With Bob?

Filed under: Random Stuff — Bob Gifford @ 7:24 am

I mentioned at the beginning of the new year that I wanted to blog less often, but more in depth. I’m proud to say I’ve kept my word on the first part, but perhaps too much so. And the few posts since then have certainly not been any deeper than last year.

So what’s up with me, you ask?

Well, so maybe you didn’t ask and don’t really care, but I’m going to tell you anyway.

I’ve wanted to write about positive progressive Christian policy choices instead of just responding to the latest ridiculousness from Robertson, Falwell or Dobson, but it’s not easy. It’s so tempting to get distracted by the day-to-day news cycle (SoTU anyone?) and it’s so hard to get focused on a single issue given how much needs to be done.

I was telling my Pastor that a year ago I really felt a calling to blog, but this year God seemed to be pretty indifferent whether I blogged or not. Pr. T’s advice to me was to “wait”. After all, God’s time isn’t our time.

Then I got an email from CrossLeft announcing the formation of a progressive Christian think tank, and asking for volunteers to write policy papers on pressing political issues from a progressive Christian perspective. After trading emails with Gary Vance, we’ve decided that I will tackle the health care topic. This seems to be just what I’ve been looking for — an opportunity to dive deep into a substantive and important policy area and develop some policy recommendations based on a faithful reading of the Gospel. Pr. T’s advice was spot on. I’m not so arrogant to be sure that I’m called by God to do this, but I’m also not so faithless to ignore the synchronicity involved either.

As I delve into the details of health care, I’ll blog about what I’m learning and ask for your feedback. I won’t be blogging as often as I did last year, but I imagine I’ll have more to say than I did last month.
