This Site Best Viewed with Firefox

Filed under: Random Stuff — Bob Gifford @ 7:30 pm

Get Firefox!Over the past few months, I’ve had comments (well, complaints, really) that the comment box on this blog spilled over into the sidebar, so the commenter can’t see what they’re typing. I’ve never been able to re-create the problem myself, and I figured that upgrading to WordPress 1.5 would have taken care of it. Not so. After another complaint, I decided to try viewing this site with Internet Explorer, and was surprised to find that IE is the cause ot the comment box problem.

I took a look at the html and the css style sheet, and it all looks correct, but then my knowledge of both is pretty superficial. So, I don’t know how to correct this for you IE users. My solution, of course, is to recommend that you move to Firefox or any of the other open source non-Microsoft browsers.

Has anyone else run across this? Is this due to Microsoft’s ongoing attempts to add non-standard functionality into IE to maintain their market dominance? Any ideas on how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated. In the meantime, apologies to any IE users.

  1. I think it’s a common WordPress/IE issue. I have problems like that when I’m at work, but never at home on my desktop that runs FireFox or my laptop that uses Safari.

Anyway….at least on my page, the box still works fine…it just looks a little funny on IE.

  2. Blue robot’s three-column layout shows a hack that may work.

I think this is a problem with how IE handles css. For a lonng time Microsoft let it go, because they could, and designers would work around it. Now they’re feeling some heat from Firefox. I believe they plan to fix this and some other things in a planned new version of IE.

I used to try to accomodate IE, but life’s too short. For a class website that my students need to visit, I’ll try to detect the user agent. If it’s IE, I have the page drop to a default plain-vanilla layout. (I don’t know if you can do that with WordPress; Maybe with a theme-switcher? “Click here if you’re using IE?”) Otherwise, my feeling is if your browser doesn’t work right, get another browser. If that deprives me of a few visitors, I can accept that.

  3. I have found that IE is eternally fussy no matter what I am trying to do. Pages that display beautifully in Firefox make me cringe in IE. Solution: IE must die!

  4. I was showing my partner’s mother my blog all resplendent with birthing photos from my last child’s birth. We got to my blog and I didn’t recognize it. Sort of like getting caught with your pants down? My sidebar had moved and nothing looked like how it does on my mac or pc at home. Both of my computers access the net via firefox. My partner’s mother has ie. So, I just found out why everyone had those buttons in their sidebars saying best viewed with firefox.
